It was just over four years ago that PUP had a cast of classic video game characters belt out the lyrics to "DVP," and the attention to digital detail has now come full circle for the band thanks to the latest Paper Mario game.
Following some initial rumblings of PUP references in the newly released Paper Mario: The Origami King, drummer Zack Mykula shared screenshots on Twitter that show the game's Toad making a trio of references to their Juno Award-winning 2019 album Morbid Stuff.
In the dark desert scene, Toad's dialogue references the album's title track, "Free at Last" and "Closure," and it may not be a coincidence that he's standing fairly close to a cactus.
"I am legit in love with this game and if this is NOT a coincidence it might be the coolest thing ever to happen to me," Mykula wrote. "Mario, like for many, is my childhood."

PUP's video for "Kids," which was helmed by "DVP" director Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux, is in contention for the 2020 Prism Prize this week. The band shared new single "Anaphylaxis" in April and rolled out Live at the Electric Ballroom earlier this month.
