Grandaddy co-founder and long-standing bass player Kevin Garcia has died. The band broke the sad news on Facebook this evening (May 2), with Garcia suffering a "massive stroke" on Monday. He was 41.
"There are no accurate words to express what we need to," the band wrote. "We are absolutely shattered to say that we lost our friend and band mate Kevin Garcia early this afternoon. He succumbed to the effects of a massive stroke. We were all able to say goodbye to him and he was surrounded by his closest friends and family here in Modesto."
The post added: "Kevin started playing with Grandaddy when he was fifteen. He was an actual angel. He navigated life with a grace, a generosity and a kindness that was utterly unique. And contagious. He is loved so deeply by so many."
As a founding member of the group, Garcia played on all the band's album, including their most recent effort, 2016's The Last Place. The group were scheduled to begin a North American tour this Sunday (May 7) in Vancouver. However, as of press time, it is unclear if the dates will be affected by Garcia's tragic and sudden passing.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help pay for the upcoming expenses of Garcia's family.
