Mac DeMarco's cat Pickles wasn't quite the most famous feline in indie rock — that title surely goes to Best Coast's late cat Snacks — but the tabby became familiar to fans after DeMarco posted a song in 2018 titled "Pickles," featuring a four-minute video of the cat, who lived behind the musician's garage. Sadly, DeMarco has now announced the death of Pickles and shared three songs in tribute.
DeMarco posted the tracks to his YouTube channel, titling them simply with cat emojis. The videos are captioned, "Pickles: ? - 2023." DeMarco wrote, "Goodbye my little man. Thank you for choosing us for your life. You'll always be the king of the backyard. I love you."
As for the songs, they're peaceful instrumentals that sound very much like DeMarco's recent album Five Easy Hot Dogs. As for the accompanying videos, they're cute videos of the rather small and generally content-looking Pickles. Even though the cat was known for living behind the garage, the videos also show him hanging out inside the house and in DeMarco's studio.
Watch the clips below. Rest in peace, Pickles!
Exclaim! recently interviewed DeMarco about Five Easy Hot Dogs and the "ridiculous" state of indie rock these days.
