In just over a year, Danish-bred duo the Raveonettes put out their Raven in the Grave LP, the massive Rarities/B-sides collection and the stopgap EP Into the Night. Apparently, there's plenty of dream-pop crunch left in the group as they enter their tenth year of existence, since they've just announced another full-length affair, Observator.
Vice Records confirms that the LP arrives September 11, and the label describes the set as "the greatest exploration of [the Raveonettes'] signature dark, big beat, melancholic, fuzzy sound to date."
A tracklisting has yet to pop up, but an interview with Spin explains that Richard Gottehrer, who produced the Raveonettes' 2005 sophomore LP Pretty in Black, was brought back to produce.
At the request of guitarist Sune Rose Wagner, recording sessions took place at Hollywood's Sunset Sound studio. The rich history of the studio, which has recorded artists like the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Beck, the Doors, Prince and more, supposedly inspired the duo's latest batch of tunes.
"Some of my favourite albums are from there," Wagner admitted in the interview. "As part of the band's ten-year anniversary I wanted to do something special. So I insisted on us going there. I did not regret that at all. I think if we had not gone there the album would be very different and not as good as it is now. It made a huge difference to be in that environment surrounded by all those ghosts of genius. It made singing a lot easier and a lot more heartfelt."
As for the songs, Observator apparently came to shape while Wagner was on a three-day bender in California.
"I've always worked like that. I try to channel [drinking] into something creative. I write down simple words for lyrics, song titles, anything. Or it can be actual stories. The whole idea with the album title -- and the song 'Observations' -- came because I feel like I was sort of like out there observing myself and other people and what goes on around me."
