Real Tuesday Weld

While not without its charm, the Real Tuesday Weld's brand of updated old-time music, which they call "antique beat," has been beginning to get a little stale. There are only so many crooned tales of a long-forgotten London to be spun, so returning to collaborate with horror author Glen Duncan was a very good idea indeed, as the resultant soundtrack for The Last Werewolf is their most interesting album in a long time. Not surprisingly, the songs have an overwhelming lupine theme, but what's less expected is the eclectic nature of some of the record. Stephen Coates expands his sound, thanks to some guest vocalists, and throws in some tracks like the raucous, growled "Wolfman," which are more than a little jarring. The majority of it, however, is recognisable as the Real Tuesday Weld, even when Coates recites lines from the novel. More importantly, it works as a standalone release for listeners who might not have read the book. Even without that particular narrative thread, The Last Werewolf: A Soundtrack is still a solid piece of work.
