The Dance Paradox

BY Sarah FergusonPublished Oct 9, 2009

Redshape's debut full-length is composed of slow builds and subtleties. It's a dense compaction of samples and effects, synthesizers and drums. With respect for the romantic and the mysterious, the Berlin-based techno artist keeps his identity secret and wears a mask while performing. His first records came out in 2006. "Seduce Me" opens the LP, using vibrant live drum samples and a fast-moving synth melody united with low, deep sounds. "Garage GT" moves the record into an airy, smoky setting; its coexistent collage of audio including street sirens fit with eerie synths. "Bound (Part 1 & 2)" is dark and progressive, ending at a place of hope and optimism. "Rorschach's Game" is also about transforming darkness into harmony, with sparkling, lit textures and cacophonous banging. Last track "Dark & Sticky" sounds fiendish and militaristic, winding-up strange weaponry and slow marching percussion. With great communication between all elements presented, The Dance Paradox legitimizes honesty in music and the love and desire of expression.
