R.E.M.

Reveal

BY Michael BarclayPublished Jun 1, 2001

Yawn. While their last album Up had numerous sublime moments that suggested a rejuvenation - the god-awful single "Lotus" was not among those moments - Reveal is a comfortable and inconsequential R.E.M. album for Dawson's Creek viewers who thought Automatic For the People was too weird. The single "Imitation of Life" is just as appalling as "The Great Beyond," and it's impossible to listen to a song subtitled "You're Gonna Be A Star" without wondering why Stipe hangs around Courtney Love. Anyone who thought things were looking Up was sadly mistaken.
