Richard Youngs

Sapphie

BY James KeastPublished Sep 1, 2000

Originally released in '98 on now defunct Oblique Recordings, British improviser Richard Youngs gets new life for his fifth solo record courtesy of Jagjaguwar. Containing only three tracks over 37 minutes, all you get is the nylon strings on Youngs' classical guitar, and his haunting, echo-y high-range singing voice. The length is about perfect; any longer and the lack of variety would become glaringly annoying. Youngs isn't everyone's cuppa, but for those in no hurry and with a vast open space to let his voice bounce around in, Youngs provides a deep pool to dive into.
