​Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Kacey Musgraves Slam Alabama Abortion Ban

A number of artists and musicians have spoken out against the anti-abortion bill passed into law in Alabama this week — making for the harshest anti-abortion laws in the United States since Roe v. Wade in 1973.
 
The new legislation bans abortions except in order "to avoid a serious health risk to the unborn child's mother" or if the "unborn child has a lethal anomaly." Exceptions cannot be made in cases such as pregnancy by rape or incest, and doctors who perform the procedure could face up to 99 years in prison.
 
As such, a number of prominent female figures from the entertainment industry have used their platforms to denounce the law and pledge support for the women subjected to it.
 
Rihanna cast a "SHAME ON YOU!" specifically towards the white men supporting the restrictions on women, while Lady Gaga questioned why "there's a higher penalty for doctors who perform these operations than for most rapists."
 
Other musicians like Kacey Musgraves, Lizzo, Janelle Monáe and Waxahatchee also voiced their concern and disgust at the new laws, while TV personalities like Ellen DeGeneres and Jameela Jamil also spoke out.

i woke up to the news of this terrible abortion ban rattled & disheartened. alabama is my home state as many of you know. i lived there for the first 22 years of my life & it's a huge part of who i am. i love the south deeply & believe at its best it is just pure magic. but as many know, being southern means living with a visceral & jarring divide perpetually. you're so often brushing shoulders with people whose political beliefs will jolt & disturb you to your very core. our leaders & lawmakers are trying to enforce a ban that is absolutely cruel. it's medieval, & like all other hateful decisions made by the most powerful people in our government, it's going to hit the most marginalized folks the hardest. truly tragic, endlessly frustrating & literally so close to home. i guess i'm writing this just to say to all of you: hold space for your anger. hold space for your sadness. i have so much love in my heart for every single person who's been negatively affected by this news today. & hey, get involved however you can. i posted a link in my bio to a great article with some resources for helping out. alabama, i love you but you're bringing me down.
