Robert Plant's back catalogue was toasted earlier this year with the first three instalments of a reissue series from Led Zeppelin, but the iconic vocalist is focusing on the future with some new material of his own. Plant will deliver lullaby and… The Ceaseless Roar, his first solo album in four years, this fall via Nonesuch.
Due September 9, the album is Plant's follow-up to 2010's Band of Joy and finds him delivering 11 tracks with his current backup band, the Sensational Space Shifters. Though a tracklisting has not yet been delivered, a press release explains that nine of the songs are original compositions from Plant and his six-piece band. First single "Rainbow," however, is available to stream now, and will go up for sale as a digital single tomorrow (June 24). You can check out the lightly thumped track down below.
According to a statement from Plant, lullaby and… The Ceaseless Roar is "a celebratory record," that comes across as "powerful, gritty, African, Trance meets Zep." Following a series of global tour dates that found the current lineup gelling together, recording sessions took place at Helium Studios in Wiltshire, Real World Studios in Bath, UK and London's Contino Rooms.
"The whole impetus of my life as a singer has to be driven by a good brotherhood. I am very lucky to work with the Sensational Space Shifters," Plant explained. "They come from exciting areas of contemporary music…I have been around awhile and I ask myself, do I have anything to say? Is there a song still inside me? In my heart? I see life and what's happening to me. Along the trail there are expectations, disappointments, happiness, questions and strong relationships and now I'm able to express my feelings through melody, power and trance; together in a kaleidoscope of sound, colour, and friendship."
While this is the first album to feature Plant supported by this particular lineup, multi-instrumentalists Justin Adams and John Baggott appeared on Plant's 2002 LP Dreamland, and also played alongside Sensational Space Shifters bassist Billy Fuller and guitarist/banjoist Liam "Skin" Tyson on Plant's 2005 effort Mighty Rearranger. The Sensational Space Shifters also includes drummer Dave Smith and Juldeh Camara.
