Whether because of their impressive back catalogue or their current stint Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, The Roots are one of the most beloved hip-hop groups of all time, and the hard-working act are now being toasted in their hometown of Philadelphia with a tributary mural.
Commissioned by the City of Philadelphia, the art piece will be unveiled May 31 at the World Communications Charter School, close to the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) where Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter and Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson formed the band.
As you can see above, Tatyana Fazlalizadeh and Amber Art and Design's work vibrantly preserves the mugs of the band members. It also pays tribute to their oeuvre via drawings of dubbed cassette copies of albums like Illadelph Halflife.
"The first meeting with the artists was amazing; we shared ideas of what the final mural could end up looking like. It's beyond anything Tariq and I ever dreamed of," Questlove had previously said in a statement. "And to have it along South Street, near the same corners we were kicked off of for playing our music is fantastic."
The mural is the latest instalment of the City of Philadelphia's Mural Arts Program.
In other news, the Roots have plans to issue their & Then You Shoot Your Cousin in late 2013 or 2014.
