It began with a rumble. Slow churning dubstep started off Ryan Hemsworth's set, but almost anything would've been appropriate given how eclectic his shows tend to be. They can often be too varied, making for a busy mix, but his Osheaga set flowed beautifully from style to style and frequently blended them perfectly. Seeing as Hemsworth is such a talented producer, it's a shame that he hasn't found a way to incorporate those skills in his live performance.
Having said that, his mixing skills are exemplary, which is more than can said of a lot of producers who favour a DJ set. Hemsworth dubbed up Soulja Boy, threw in samples from Death Cab for Cutie and Jimmy Eat World, managed to squeeze in Elliott Smith, and floated R. Kelly through cloud-rap. Yet no matter how diverse the set was, it always fell back to southern hip-hop, making his performance strike a chord between wistful and grimy.
