Sam Smith has been open about their gender fluidity and sexuality in the past, but the U.K. singer has now announced that they have officially switched pronouns to they/them.
Smith made the announcement on Twitter, saying, "After a lifetime of being at war with my gender I've decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out."
Smith acknowledged their support system, but also noted that "I've been very nervous about announcing this because I care too much about what people think." Ultimately, though, they decided "fuck it!"
Smith went on to declare that they are not at a point where they can serve as an eloquent spokesperson for the non-binary community, but that they want to be "visible and open."
At the end of a string of tweets, Smith concluded: "I'm scared shitless, but feeling super free right now."
