Samara Lubelski

Parallel Suns is Lubelski’s third album; hopefully it will get her some well-deserved attention, because she’s certainly a talented solo artist. Her vocals are feather-soft but not cloying; she harmonises and sings with herself over sweet, sometimes otherworldly soft-pop songs. The end result is somewhere between the Sea and Cake and Margo Guryan: light, almost lounge-y, at times, shimmering and undeniably well made. Parallel Suns is serene and very easy to listen to but does contain a few darker touches. The lovely "Born From The Tree” goes from blithe to eerie with the change of a chord, and the sudden, dramatic strings make for a startling addition halfway through the track. Though her music is, for lack of a better word, ethereal and her lyrics/song titles at times, a tad whimsical ("Have You Seen the Colors,” "Tasting the Candy”), Lubelski’s talent is obvious, and her songs are far from quaint. Parallel Suns is a good album and should appeal to a broad range of listeners.
