Fibonacci Forever is a cross-Canada trek that incorporates the glorious sounds of this majestic country within its diffusive, amorphous mist of drone. The debut outing from a duo who reside four time zones away from each other (Michelle Mostacci lives in Hamilton, ON while Jordan Christoff hails from BC), this collection of four extended sound sculptures is both fascinating and at times a touch chaotic.
Released on the relatively young Lagerstaette imprint, the disc is a swirling emulsion of nature sounds and instrument-based material. Mostacci and Christoff have made it clear that the tracks were hand-crafted live, with no pre-sets, computers or overdubs involved in an effort to preserve the energy of the collaboration. The resultant miasma smacks of the 21st century new-age revival, the maligned genre of yore receiving a much-needed facelift and reappraisal.
Sonically, Saturn's Daughter are aligned with under-the-radar drone outfits such as Matt LaJoie operating under his ML Wah guise, or the duo of Rod Hamilton and Tiffany Seal. Both of the aforementioned hail from the U.S., so representation from north of the border is certainly welcome in this resonant channel of music-making. Output this evocative is alluring enough to warrant a position in the vast constellation of ambient sound.
