When Shearwater jumped ship from Matador to Sub Pop back in the spring, the Texas band promised that they had a new LP on the horizon. At the time, the group said that the record would be out in early 2012. Sure enough, they have now confirmed that Animal Joy will be out on February 14.
The album was recorded in Austin with producer Danny Reisch (White Denim) and then mixed by Peter Katis (Interpol, the National). Andy Stack of Wye Oak contributed, and other guest musicians played clarinet, keyboards and harp. The record evidently marks a shift away from the band's usual sound, as no harps or glockenspiels were used.
Shearwater founder Jonathan Meiburg previously suggested that this album might be a bit more chaotic than we're used to hearing from the band. He previously revealed, "We're having trouble taming this one, but luckily, we don't really want to."
To promote the disc, Shearwater will be embarking on a tour with Sharon Van Etten -- another artist who is releasing a new LP through a new label next year. See the schedule below.
