Sam Chown's bio describes his musical work as more (or maybe less) than a band, but more so a hypothetical entity. Learning to play a variety of instruments at a young age, the artist known better as SHMU has since gone on to play nearly all the instruments himself when recording. Triggering a good deal of the instrumentation through electronics and sampling in a live setting, SHMU was able to demonstrate his gearhead prowess in an Exclaim! TV session.
We invited SHMU to bring his elaborate drum and electronics set-up out back of the Exclaim! office, where he delivered a one-man performance of "Pictionary," the leading single from his forthcoming album Shhh!!!!, to be released October 30 on GTZ Records.
Kick-starting some pre-recorded electric guitars using a trigger pad, Chown picks up his drumsticks to lay down some impressive fills on his kit. All the while, he stays in key while delivering airy vocals through a headset microphone — no small feat considering his accurate, active work on the drums.
