Toronto ex-pat, Zorch member and Flaming Lips fwend Sam Chown is working out of Austin these days under his Shmu moniker, and he's shared a trio of new tracks in anticipation of some upcoming U.S. tour dates.
The string of gigs won't bring him back north of the border, but hometown fans can still listen to what he's been working on. The first new track is titled "Sensory Glitch" — and as the title implies, it's a compilation of hiccuping beats and wonky sounds that makes for an overstimulating listen.
The intricately pieced together electronic number is set to appear on a forthcoming record called Shhh!!!, which will blur the lines "between live band performances of glitchy sample-based shoegaze rock and full on dreamy, yet glitchy electronic pieces."
Shmu is also prepping a lo-fi sister record called Ooooze!, which delivers some solo renditions of the Shhh!!! material, as well as some entirely separate "low-key dreampop." He's also offered up a pair of tunes from the sister record in the form of "Escapism" and "Unsatisfied." The former is definitely a more straight-forward, melodic garage rocker, while the latter veers back into the realm of psyched-out experimental pop.
