Wipe the sleep from your eyes — Fernie folksters Shred Kelly have released their sixth studio album, Blurry Vision.
The 10-track follow-up to 2020's Like a Rising Sun was produced by Nygel Asselin at The Farm Studio in Gibsons on BC's Sunshine Coast.
The writing and recording process involved the band making a week-long venture to a remote cabin where they shared meals and experiences beyond the confines of the studio, enabling them to really reconnect. For the quartet of Tim Newton, Sage McBride, Ty West and Ryan Mildenberger, this close-knit collaboration after years of time apart amid the pandemic shot a newfound spark of invigoration into their material.
Opening track "Stained Glass" captures this energy, as well as their approach to making the record: it began one night on the couch when McBride started playing a riff and Newton added a chorus. But it really came alive — or "grew in epicness," as McBride put it — when they brought it into the jam room and everyone added their distinctive layers. "This song sets the pace for the whole album," she added. "Watching storm roll in and referencing the light and dark that swirls around us every moment of our existence."
New single "Lost Without You" is a wholesome, tambourine-heavy ode to McBride and Newton's relationship and appreciating the little things. They had their first daughter together in 2019 and, after the pandemic hit, were cut off from a lot of support and community for much of 2020 and 2021.
"Tim and I spent two years mostly tagging off parenting and working most hours of the day to pivot our careers and stay afloat in a pretty stressful time," McBride explained. "However, in that time, we had weekly dance parties, we cooked every meal together, and things really slowed down; we saved up and spent a lot of quality time with our daughter."
