Edmonton punk outfit Slates and Eamon McGrath will be reunited on wax, as they've just announced a split 7-inch featuring home-recorded covers of each other's songs.
Hailing from the same hometown, the musicians have a history. Slates frontman James Stewart and the now Toronto-based McGrath shared a fondness for "screaming whisky obscenities at each other come last call," while bassist Lee Klippenstein plays in McGrath's band when they travel out west and drummer Dallas Thompson taught McGrath's little brother at school.
It makes sense then, that the artists have decided to pay tribute to their connection by taking on each other's songs for the new split single. McGrath covers "Molina Blues" from Slates' latest LP Taiga, while Slates add a little roughness to "Teardrop on the Sun" and "Auditorium" from McGrath's Young Canadians.
The 7-inch is due out on October 21 through New Damage Records, and only 400 copies will be pressed.
McGrath is currently touring across Europe, while Slates have announced a new string of live dates with Life in Vacuum. You can check those out below.
