Who are you?
Janet from Sleater-Kinney
What are you up to?
I'm sitting on a bed in a hotel in London, recovering from a day trying to get around this gigantic, crowded metropolis. Sleater-Kinney is here promoting the new album and playing a BBC radio session. Getting excited for S-K U.S. tour in May.
Hometown and current HQ:
Born and raised in Hollywood, CA, but moved away at 17. After a six-year stint in San Francisco, I now reside, and probably will for the rest of my life, in Portland, OR.
Current fixations:
I don't have an addictive personality, and don't often become fixated on things, except sometimes a certain boy. So, I guess I'm fixated on one of those right now, but he lives far away and that helps.
Mind altering work of art:
The new Ghetty museum in Los Angeles. Subtly fantastic.
Most memorable/inspirational gig? And why?
Lots of these in my memory. both bands I've played in and bands I've watched, but I'll stick to a show I attended. When I saw REM play the Kabuki theatre in San Francisco in 1984, I left thinking I wanted to start a band. I had never felt that kind of amazing positive energy from performers before, like they were passing the ability to play straight into the audience. Also, Fugazi last year in Seattle blew me away still. I danced the whole time.
What should everyone shut up about?
Brittney Spears and that other one who's name I can't remember.
Your greatest strength/weakness:
Strength: my TCB (take care of business) abilities.
Weakness: I allow myself to become overwhelmed.
Your vital daily ritual:
Plucking eyebrows
Guilty pleasure:
Plucking eyebrows
If I wasn't playing music I would be:
A veterinarian, a cowgirl, a photographer.
Your most memorable day job:
Researching and setting up photo shoots for an ad agency in Portland. Very challenging stuff and the best department full of people a person could wish for.
Best/worst advice received:
Don't take no for an answer if it's important enough to you.
I would drop everything to play a benefit for…
Greyhound rescue operation.
What makes you want to take it off and get it on?
A certain person, free time, sunshine, rain, clean sheets, Marvin Gaye.
What personal trait would make you kick someone out of your band and/or bed? And have you?
I did kick someone out of my band once, but he had so many annoying personal traits, it doesn't count. The most annoying of all though, would have to be conceit.
When I think of Canada I think:
That song, "Blame Canada." (This answer is for our manager Julie Butterfield. If I don't say this, she'll be mad.)
Music and sex: Is there a difference? Why?
They both are best when they rely on emotion, the space between the beats, intuition and loosing oneself. The difference is that when you play music, you usually aren't touching another person.
Strangest brush with celebrity:
Mike Watt telling me he likes Sleater-Kinney.
What does your mom wish you were doing instead?
She's just glad I'm happy.
