Funk legends Sly & the Family Stone have had no shortage of reissue attention of late, and their golden years will be celebrated further with a new live box set.
Called Live at the Fillmore East, the release collects exactly what it describes, documenting the band's two-night stand at New York's legendary concert venue in 1968.
The CD edition of the release will comprise four discs, documenting both the early and late performances from October 4 and 5, 1968. The concert took place at a pivotal moment in the band's career, with their third album Life having just hit stores.
If you don't feel like owning four live performances, an abbreviated double vinyl release is also on the way. The collection features hand-picked songs from the Roots' guitarist, "Captain" Kirk Douglas.
In a press release, Douglas offered the following statement:
This performance is living breathing evidence of how much of a force of nature Sly & the Family Stone were at this point of their career. Every member of the group shines in a way that I can only describe as a revelation. It was enjoyable listening to the band break free from the studio arrangements of the songs we know and love to find new interpretations. And to think they did this twice in one evening! The heaviest of rock and the funkiest of soul jumps out of the speakers combined with a message just as relevant today as the day it was recorded. This deserves to be played LOUD!
The CD box set of Live at the Fillmore East will arrive on July 17 via Epic/Legacy, while the vinyl edition will arrive a whole lot sooner, hitting shelves on April 18 for Record Store Day.
