Seeing as the Smiths haven't released an album of new material since 1987, people are more eager than ever to revisit the band's legendary back catalogue. This year already we've seen a star-studded tribute album, a box set of vocal covers and a massive anthology reissue. The latest reimagining is perhaps the most intriguing yet: a number of Smiths songs turned into comic book stories.
The project is called Unite and Take Over and the comic is due to come out through SpazDog Press. It asks the question: "What story plays in your head when you listen to your favourite Smiths song?"
A number of comic book creators will turn each selected song into a four- to eight-page story. Currently, 13 scripts have been approved (each based on a Smiths songs) with several more almost done. See the confirmed songs and stories below.
Publisher Shawn Demumbrum is currently raising funds with a Kickstarter campaign to ensure that this actually happens. He's currently more than a third of the way to his $3,000 goal. Head over to the campaign page to read more and make a pledge.
Unite and Take Over is due to premiere at the Tucson Comic Con in November, assuming that the Kickstarter campaign succeeds.
