New York production whiz Ryan Lott broke through with the electronic-infused broken hip-hop of his Son Lux project with 2008's At War With Walls and Mazes. In the three years since then, he only returned with last year's Weapons EP, but now he's finally lined up a sophomore effort. All it took was some nudging from National Public Radio.
NPR's All Songs Considered contacted Lott to take part in their annual RPM series, which sees the program document an artist as he or she tries to create an album in 28 days. Lott accepted the challenge, quit his day job and shelved the sophomore Son Lux album he had been slowly piecing together, instead focusing on what would become We Are Rising.
Recruiting the help of the DM Stith, Jace Everett, My Brightest Diamond's Shara Worden and Sufjan Stevens collaborators the yMusic sextet, Lott's creative vision was realized. A press release describes We Are Rising as an "exquisitely arranged album of classical notions, modern electronics, unusual pop and transcendent emotion."
Despite initially receiving an April 26 release date, Anticon will now drop We Are Rising on CD on June 14 and on vinyl on June 28. The entire album can be streamed in the player below.
We Are Rising:
1. "Flickers"
2. "All The Right Things"
3. "Rising"
4. "Leave The Riches"
5. "Flowers"
6. "Chase"
7. "Claws"
8. "Let Go"
9. "Rebuild"
