Sonic Youth Sign to Matador

So the guessing game is finally over — Sonic Youth have signed with Matador. The New York-based imprint announced today (September 9) that the band have officially joined the Matador stable and would be releasing a new studio album sometime next year.

As we previously reported, Sonic Youth dropped word the other week that they were indeed jumping ship from their longtime major-label home of Geffen for greener, then-unnamed indie pastures. "The last four or five records we did were just so compromised by that [major label] situation,” Thurston Moore recently told Rolling Stone.

Sonic Youth have yet to provide many details about their Matador debut, which will mark the group’s 16th album, other than that they are working on it now and a spring 2009 release is what they are aiming for. The Norwegian newspaper Dagsavisen has said the album will bear the title The Eternal, but the group have yet to confirm this.
