Sonogram

Heartbeat Submarines

BY David LewisPublished Dec 1, 1999

Sonogram combine new age minimalism with lyrical flair to create electronic miniatures of moody opulence. “Dresden Girls” sets the tone with a heavily processed melody conjured up out of sustained drone tones. It’s a sign of the casual alchemy of Sonogramn’s signature sound, from the contrapuntal Eastern loops of “Has Anyone Seen Cornelius,” to the moody variations that distinguish “Fiber-Optic,” “Spaceman’s Blues” and the gradual accretion of overlapping samples in the title piece. Definitely worth owning a good set of headphones for this one.
