SoundCloud to Match Streaming Royalties with Fan-Powered Friday

The Friday initiative marks one year since the platform started its fan-powered royalties system for independent creators

SoundCloud has announced Fan-Powered Friday, a new initiative that'll see the platform match 100 percent of the streaming revenue made by each artist (in other words, doubling their earnings for the day) this Friday, April 29.

It's a promising move that's reminiscent of Bandcamp Fridays, and it's in celebration of the one-year anniversary of SoundCloud's fan-powered royalty payment model, which saw the company distribute fans' money directly to the artists they'd been listening to rather than pooling the revenue and divide it across the platform, which is the model of streamers like Spotify.

About its fan-powered royalties program, SoundCloud said: "Fan-powered royalties are a more equitable and transparent way for independent artists who monetize directly with SoundCloud to get paid. The more fans listen on SoundCloud, and listen to your music, the more you get paid."
