If Soundgarden's new rarities-loaded 20th anniversary edition of Superunknown has you drooling, let it be known that the band plan to deliver more unheard material in the future via a rarities set and, eventually, a 25th anniversary reissue of landmark effort Badmotorfinger.
In a new Billboard interview, guitarist Kim Thayil made mention of a collection that would gather all sorts of B-sides and other assorted treasures, noting that some of the tracks would be those off the Superunknown re-release, which arrives tomorrow (June 3) via A&M Records/UME.
"I've been talking about that since the mid-'90s — people still ask me about it in the (online) forums," Thayil said of the upcoming rarities set. "But then the band broke up, and I thought when we got back together four and a half years ago we'd start on that project. But first we did the retrospective best-of [2010's Telephantasm] and then a live record [2011's Live on I-5] and then a new album [2012's King Animal] came out, and these tours came up and now Superunknown's 20. But the B-sides and all that stuff will be compiled in the future into a separate, stand-alone record."
Though a due date and proper info behind the release have yet to be determined, the package would presumably appear before an anniversary edition of Badmotorfinger, which Thayil predicts will bust out of a rusty cage sometime in 2016. The guitarist notes that the band have discussed the possibility of an expanded reissue that would include additional B-sides, live tracks and rehearsal material, and cited the influence of the album on "the rock community."
"It had a strong influence on other musicians," Thayil said. "Superunknown probably did as well, but it's success was not just with musicians but with fans as well. Badmotorfinger had an impact with listeners but also with guitarists and drummers and singers, people who started bands. It definitely deserves the same kind of treatment we're giving (Superunknown)."
Though set to promote Superunknown on an upcoming tour with Nine Inch Nails and Death Grips, Thayil said the band plan to record new songs at some point. Most recently, though, they hit the studio to put work into an as-yet-undetailed track first written in 1990.
