Following a series of full-lengths and singles on a variety of labels, Chapel Hill, NC outfit Spider Bags are settling down with home state imprint Merge Records for the release of their fourth LP, Frozen Letter.
A press release explains that the album, which arrives August 5, features the current lineup of guitarist Dan McGee, bassist Steve Oliva and drummer Rock Forbes, and it's apparently a "weird, trippy record," that "rocks with the clairvoyance of three musicians who have spent a lot of time recording and touring together over the last few years."
The eight-song set was recorded with engineer/producer Wesley Wolfe as the trio were laying down tracks as the backing band for an as-yet-unfinished LP from blues musician Reese McHenry. The Frozen Letter cuts were completed in three days.
"When we started this record, we weren't even thinking about it being released. We just did it to have fun and keep moving forward," Forbes said in a statement.
Opener "Back Again With You in the World" is described as a "riff-driven rocker" featuring a Roxy Music-style sax solo. You find the rollicking number in the SoundCloud player down below.
Elsewhere the band is said to flirt with Chuck Berry and New York Dolls influences, and tack on a cover of John Wesley Coleman's "Summer of '79."
Fittingly enough for their first release on Merge, the band's "We Got Problems" includes a guest appearance from label mogul/Superchunk frontman Mac McCaughan on guitar. A full tracklisting has not yet been made available, but you can check out the cover art for Frozen Letter up above.
