Following last fall's Hello Jesus EP, Caledonia member Steve Gates will continue with his budding solo career when he delivers his debut LP A Bee in Her Mouth later this month. The Haligonian singer-songwriter's latest affair arrives independently on February 28.
A press release explains that the recording sessions for A Bee in Her Mouth started a day after Gates saw Daniel Lanois speak about trusting themselves in the studios, and apparently Lanois left an impression on the younger musician both as a producer and as a songwriter. The 12-song outing is described as having "harmonies reminiscent of The Band and the ambience of a Lanois record."
Gates tracked the LP with producer John Critchley (Dan Mangan, Elliott Brood) in a makeshift studio set up in a Halifax apartment, and the solo musician invited a number of local friends to participate. Included on the record are Jenn Grant and In-flight Safety member Daniel Ledwell on "Something New," while members of Caledonia pop up on tracks as well. You can check out a stream of the folksy opening number "Proud Convey It" down below.
Kris Pope (Acres and Acres, Jenn Grant) and Adam Fine (Gypsophila) are also featured on a A Bee in Her Mouth, and the pair will back up Gates on his upcoming North American tour. The trip starts off in Western Canada in early March, with a handful of dates spread across Alberta and British Columbia. Gates will, however, hit up Ontario and Quebec before returning to the Maritimes, capping everything off with a performance in Chester, NS. You can see the schedule down below.
