Wavelength Festival returned to Toronto last month, and now the arts collective of the same name has announced plans for a quieter kind of show. Billed as "Don't Speak," the Wavelength-presented performance is described as "a concert where talking is forbidden." It's set to take place on March 25 at Array Space in Toronto.
Providing the sound for the evening of all music, no talking will be Seattle-based electronic singer-songwriter Benoît Pioulard, Toronto drone duo North Atlantic Drift and ambient noisemaker and video manipulator David Jones. DJ Languid Lilt and General Chaos will also add to the sonic atmosphere. In addition to the music, the event seeks to create an environment of "immersive sight and sound."
A press release notes that upon entering the venue, "lips must remained sealed," though writing materials will be provided for attendees to keep communication open.
"In the world of small gig live performance, there are few things more disheartening and aggravating than working hard on a set, looking forward to performing, then having the moment drowned in a din of irreverent, distracted chatter," Wavelegnth programmer Adam Bradley said in a statement. "At 'Don't Speak' we will endeavour to build a scenario in which the music and atmosphere is the foremost focus, a challenge to let down walls or examine ones existing, to let our senses guide us through the night."
