Today is the first Monday in March, meaning that it's Casimir Pulaski Day in Illinois. To celebrate the occasion, eclectic banjo plucker Sufjan Stevens has shared an early demo of his outstanding song "Casimir Pulaski Day" from 2005's Illinois.
The songwriter wrote on his blog that he isn't entirely sure when this demo was recorded, but noted that he "was obviously still working it out." He self-deprecatingly referred to himself as "Sloppy Joe." That said, this version is fairly similar to the album take, right now to the vocal harmonies and wordless falsettos towards the end. The horns and backing choir are missing, but you'll get the general point.
