Ever since actor Joaquin Phoenix first announced to the world that he was going to become a rapper, there has been speculation that the whole thing was a hoax. By the time he and brother-in-law, Casey Affleck, unveiled their bizarre documentary, I'm Still Here, we were more or less convinced it was a sham. Now - surprise, surprise - Affleck has admitted that it was fake.
The news came out in an interview with the New York Times, as Affleck admitted that I'm Still Here was fictional. He said of his star, "It's a terrific performance, it's the performance of his career." We're not sure that the people at the Golden Globes or Academy Awards are going to agree.
Affleck went on, "There were multiple takes, these are performances." According to a past review by the Los Angeles Times, the film contains "a stomach-turning sequence in which someone feuding with Phoenix defecates on the actor while he's asleep." Frankly, the idea of multiple takes of a scene like that is even more gross than the idea that it was real.
I'm Still Here may be a fake, but that doesn't make Joaquin Phoenix's recent career choices any less bizarre.
