You Know How It Goes

With Sydney Blu's You Know How It Goes, the veteran Canadian producer checks off a laundry list of pastiche that rivals her career in length. Late-night techno can be hard to access; what gets a dance floor moving at 2 a.m. won't always resonate in other environments. But even at a party, it's unlikely anyone would be asking for the I.D. of the leading "You Know How It Goes."

There's no need: you've heard it all before anyway. Sassy vocals — check. Bits of acid — check. Dramatic '80s keyboard stabs — check. It's a veritable roll call of genre conventions. Sydney Blu shows more restraint on "Incognito," and it's the obvious winner of the two productions this Farris Wheel Recordings release includes. A driving bass line and echoes of the ravey synths of Black Riot's 1988 underground-house classic "A Day In The Life" stand out on "Incognito," which like the preceding tune benefits from a slamming beat.

More genre-defined than genre-defining, You Know How It Goes can still probably keep the party going past last call, even if nobody remembers the soundtrack the next day.
