Tanika Charles has been named the Polaris Music Prize's first-ever artist in residence.
The accolade is awarded by Polaris, Lixar and the National Music Centre, and grants the recipient a five-day residency at Studio Bell in Calgary as part of the newly launched Polaris Artist Residency program.
The winner was selected from this year's Polaris Music Prize long list, on which Charles' The Gumption was included.
In addition to studio access, Charles will receive the opportunity to explore the National Music Centre's collection of historical instruments and equipment.
The work resulting from the residency will also be recorded and pressed to vinyl, courtesy of Lixar.
"I was shocked to learn I'd been selected for the Polaris Artist Residency," Charles said in a statement. "This is a great opportunity to challenge myself, to hone in on my writing skills, experiment with new instruments, and possibly craft a new sound. I'm excited to work with some incredible like-minded musicians and tinker with vintage equipment we normally wouldn't have access to. And maybe I'll walk away with some key pieces of my next album."
Charles' residency will begin in January 2020.
