Tanya Tagaq took home the 2014 Polaris Music Prize with her album Animism, and now she's continuing the promotion behind that LP with a video for "Uja."
The song mixes frighteningly urgent rhythms with Tagaq's throat signing. The accompanying video takes viewers from the city to the tundra, as we start with images of traffic, buildings, burning money, and even Tagaq's name on what appears to be the Hollywood Walk of Fame. From there, we're transported into the wilderness, and things take a bloody turn before a slightly more peaceful finale. It was directed by Procter Bros; watch it below.
Animism is out through Six Shooter Records.
In related news, the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax will be giving Tagaq an honourary doctorate in May. The throat singer will also be giving the 2015 graduation address.
