Marking Black History Month, roots reggae outfit the Human Rights have released the latest preview of their upcoming album One People (out March 7): new single "Roxham Road."
In a powerful, perspective-bringing statement about the current immigration crisis, the song is about the passage of the Underground Railroad network that connected the towns of Champlain, NY, and Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle, QC. Roxham Road provided an unregulated passage between the two countries up until the mid-'70s, and remained the easiest point of entry into Canada for asylum seekers until its permanent closure in 2023.
"'Roxham Road' is a song about people taking the illegal road to freedom," the band explained in a press release. "Inspired by our late and beloved keyboardist Bernie Pitters, 'Roxham Road' calls for Canadians to take a moment and reflect on who we are before we close the door. This is especially important in the age of Trump 2.0."
