The 64th Grammy Awards ceremony has officially been postponed due to concerns over surging cases of Omicron in the States, Variety reports.
So far, no new date has been set for the Academy-hosted event, which was originally scheduled to take place on January 31 at the Crypto.com Arena (f.k.a. the Staples Center) in Los Angeles.
While restrictions at the venue have yet to overrule gatherings of such immensity (sports are still happening as scheduled), a source told Variety that "enough artists and executives voiced reluctance about appearing to convince the Academy to postpone the show."
CBS and the Academy are reportedly looking forward to returning to an in-person model when it is safe to do so, as opposed to the scaled-down version that took place last year — and saw record-low ratings.
Among this year's nominees are Justin Bieber, Joni Mitchell, Allison Russell, Caribou, Kanye West, Brandi Carlile, Jon Batiste, Billie Eilish, Lil Nas X, Olivia Rodrigo, Japanese Breakfast, H.E.R., Bo Burnham, and Lady Gaga & Tony Bennett.
Before Omicron swooped in to ruin everyone's plans, the awards show was already under heavy scrutiny for the Academy's decision to nominate controversial figures like Marilyn Manson and Louis C.K. for their respective contributions last year.
In late 2021, Drake even withdrew his Certified Lover Boy nominations, seemingly in support of his longtime collaborator, the Weeknd, who was majorly snubbed in 2020.
