A few months on from this spring's First Two Pages of Frankenstein, the National have shared two new songs: "Alphabet City" and "Space Invader."
The National have previously hinted that the sessions for Frankenstein had produced more material than ended up on the album, and the 2022 single "Weird Goodbyes" didn't end up on the LP either.
"Alphabet City" is a smouldering, anxious track that begins with atmospheric textures before swelling with lush, organic strings and pianos. The seven-minute "Space Invader" is a more traditionally arranged rock ballad, its elegant guitar strums and building drum fills sounding like a classic National cut.
Hear both songs below. The National have been on tour, and this weekend (August 20) will play Toronto with Patti Smith and U.S. Girls.
