So, what is this record (and, yes, this is a record of vinyl sides mixed off two decks)? Is it a compilation? Is it a DJ throwdown? Well, it's both — whether you're into jazz or a strutting blast of high-energy party, you don't have far to look. Black Jazz Signature is at once a respectful bow and a party mix of the titular label that was started in Oakland, CA by pianist/producer Gene Russell as a showcase for the confident, masterful black jazz scene that was active in the early '70s. Legendary DJ Theo Parrish has decided to showcase music from the label, which careens into an up-tempo R&B- and funk-influenced mix. This is no accident, as it accurately reflects the toughness and capability of the movements in the Afro-American community of the time, laying claim to both political and community pride, as well as a mastery over the music. These artists can play and the mix doesn't let up in intensity and emotion — and it is a stunning mix.
