Back in November, New Jersey screamo kings Thursday announced that they would be celebrating their debut disc, 2001's Full Collapse, with a tenth anniversary tour. Buried within the press release at the time was news that in addition to cranking out their classic post-hardcore hits, the band would also be premiering songs from their upcoming album. Having road-tested the new tunes, Thursday are now ready to release them into the marketplace.
A press release explains that Thursday will be unleashing their sixth full-length, titled No Devolución, April 12 on Epitaph. Touting a sound that transcends the screamo tag, the new album is said to explore "elements of post-rock, indie, art and experimental styles, blending it all with their post-hardcore roots for a beautifully cathartic experience unlike anything they've done before."
An interview with Spin found singer Geoff Rickly discussing the group's evolving sound, especially first single "Magnets Caught in a Metal Heart," which features an intro that adds some sort of early '80s, Police-style reggae feel onto their hard rock sound. (You can take a listen here.)
"This is a really different record and we thought we should just come out of the gates with a really different song," Rickly said. "We were always tempering our desire to make something that was more graceful, more sweeping, and this record was the first one where we said, 'You know what? Who cares? Let's say our career is over tomorrow, who fucking cares? Let's make something beautiful.'"
The interview goes on with Rickly describing another tune, "Fast to the End," as being about longtime devotion. This serves both as a his feelings on love, as well as being in a band for so many years.
"Records are always written about new love or break-ups but no one ever writes records about long-term devotion," he continued. "After 13 years as a band, this theme seemed self-evident."
Though the album doesn't come out for another couple of months, Thursday are willing to share it with some of their devoted fans. Currently on tour with Underoath, the band are holding a contest to let six fans a night enjoy the album from the comfort of the group's tour bus.
