While we're apparently not too far off from the release of Thurston Moore's new solo LP, The Best Day, the alt-guitar guru will be giving up a couple of goodies ahead of time on a new cassette release for Blanked Editions.
The former Sonic Youth leader has brought a few musicians under his wing to produce the two-track Sun Gift Earth, which is expected to land August 25 through Blanked Editions "Blank Tapes" series. A-side "Rosetta / 67P Churyumov-Gerasimenko" is inspired by the European spacecraft Rosetta currently catching up to the 67P Churyumov-Gerasimenko comet.
According to a press release, the space-inspired piece has Moore crooning out to the spacecraft with lines like, "you were born to catch her light / and revel in her flight / before she goes too far / to unnamed stars." The seven-minute number finds Moore joined by guitarist Keith Wood (a.k.a. Hush Arbors), violinist Samara Lubelski and Sunburned Hand of the Man's John Moloney on drums. The song is also said to be a tribute to the late Sun-Ra, to mark his "Earth-birth centennial."
The B-side is apparently an instrumental "bliss-metal excursion" called "Rebellion of Joy." The tape is limited to 700 copies and can be ordered here.
Details behind The Best Day, meanwhile, have yet to be delivered in full, though it's expected to land sometime in the fall through Matador. The record is said to feature collaborations with former Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, My Bloody Valentine bassist Debbie Googe and London-based musician James Sedwards.
Also coming up for Moore are a handful of festival dates and a tour with Sebadoh that brings them up into Canada together for a show at Vancouver's Biltmore Cabaret.

09/04-06 Raleigh, NC - Hopscotch Music Festival
