Though rumour has it he's working on a new studio album, Tom Waits has recently spent time looking back on his career with a slew of vinyl reissues set to drop on December 21. The timing couldn't be better, then, for the legendary gravel-voiced songwriter to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
According to the New York Times, Waits will join Alice Cooper, Darlene Love, Dr. John and, er, Neil Diamond as inductees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Artists are eligible for nomination 25 years after the release of their first single or album, and are voted on by a panel of 500 music professionals. Among the nominees who were snubbed are Donna Summer, the Beastie Boys and Bon Jovi.
In a statement, Waits said, "I am still recovering from the news. I never really cared about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame... but now I am surprised to discover how much I DO care."
The 26th annual induction ceremony will be held on March 14 at New York's Waldorf-Astoria, where Waits will make his sure-to-be-awesome acceptance speech.
