Toro y Moi

Freaking Out

BY Michael EdwardsPublished Sep 13, 2011

Although inexplicably linked with the whole chillwave scene from this point on, Chaz Bundwick has done his damndest to demonstrate that Toro Y Moi is about more than just that. While his second album, Underneath The Pine, was about redefining exactly what Toro Y Moi was about, Freaking Out is apparently about re-establishing the status quo. This is an EP of straightforward, glossy dance tunes and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. In fact, if Bundwick felt the need to indulge his '80s R&B side, it's best he did so on an EP rather than an entire album because it's a little one-dimensional, however much fun it is. The cover of Alexander O'Neal and Cherelle's "Saturday Love" doesn't do anything to improve upon the original, but will likely introduce it to a whole new appreciative audience. It's completely upstaged by both the opening and closing tracks, which demonstrate that Bundwick could write wonderfully funky jams in his sleep.
