A Tribe Called Red hit a new level of popularity with their most recent album, 2013's Polaris-shortlisted Nation II Nation. Now, the self-described "pow wow-step" practitioners are plotting their next full-length.
"This album is going to be very different than our first two," band member Bear Witness said of the Kreative Kontrol podcast. "This is going to be more collaborative, working with musicians, singer-songwriters, working with a cellist, MCs, both indigenous and not indigenous artists. It's going to be a very different process for us."
The guests are still unconfirmed, but at least one cut will feature MC Hellnback and Tanya Tagaq. Live drum groups will also appear. Working with outside musicians will allow the trio to "stretch our legs instead of just making club bangers," said Bear Witness.
Currently, preliminary sessions are underway. Bear Witness explained, "We rented a house in Ottawa and moved a studio in the basement. Then we head to Toronto to a more professional studio."
A Tribe Called Red are touring North America this winter. This includes performing at Guelph, ON's Hillside Inside festival on February 7.
They are nominated for Juno Awards for Breakthrough Group of the Year and Electronic Album of the Year.
