TV on the Radio

"Golden Age"

Okay, after some deliberation, I've decided that I'm just going to give in and sound off on the new TV On the Radio single. There are plenty of records that have been anticipated this year but after 2006's Return to Cookie Mountain solidified itself as pretty much everyone's favourite pop record, the idea of these Brooklynites following that one up has caused a frenzy.

I think one of the biggest reasons as to why people are so hungry for Dear Science is because with a month to go until its September 23 release, the damn thing hasn't leaked yet. A month is certainly far away but in the age of file-sharing, waiting feels like everything works like dog years, which means it actually feels like it's seven months away? Something like that...

Streaming on TVOntheRadio.com, "Golden Age" is not just a phenomenal shift forward for this innovative gang but also one hell of a pop song and is much more advanced than I expected it to be. There's some discussion in the blogosphere and message boards about who's on lead vocals and if you're familiar with the band, you'll know it's Kyp Malone taking the reins this time. But I feel Kyp's completely overshadowed by just about everything else: that "Wanna Be Startin' Something" bass line, those sunshinin' horns, that hypnotically tireless drum pattern and best of all, the uplifting turn when the strings come in at around the 2:10 mark.

They almost remind me of Tiger Woods — they can't help but be the best at what they do. I only hope this is just the tip of the iceberg for what we can expect from Dear Science. As I mentioned, it's streaming on the band's website, but you can also find it here if you want to avoid dealing with the bullshit that comes with media players.
