TV on the Radio's Gerard Smith Succumbs to Cancer

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Apr 20, 2011

Some sad news has hit the TV on the Radio camp: bassist Gerard Smith passed away this morning (April 20) following a battle with lung cancer. He was 34 years old.

The Brooklyn, NY outfit posted a message on their website, announcing Smith's passing.

"We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved friend and bandmate, Gerard Smith, following a courageous fight against lung cancer," the statement reads. "We will miss him terribly."

Last month, the band revealed that Smith had been diagnosed with lung cancer shortly after completing recording sessions for their latest album, Nine Types of Light, and that he would not be able to tour with the group. While the message stated that the bassist was receiving excellent medical care and that they had "seen dramatic results" in his condition, unfortunately the musician did not recover.

TV on the Radio have since cancelled the next week of shows. You can see the axed dates below.

Our thoughts and wishes go out to Smith's family, friends and bandmates.
