Following this summer's synthpop banger "So Typically Now," U.S. Girls have wagered that you should get you a girl(s) who can do both with a new single — a delicate dirge called "Bless This Mess."
Created alongside Evan Gordon, the accompanying video uses 1998 footage of a teenage Meg Remy singing to the camera, spliced and diced to make it seem like she's singing the song. They call it a "realfake" (but it's not that deep).
"Before camera phones, the family camcorder was often the mirror tool used to capture selfie-like performances of teenage daydreams and insecurities," Remy shared in a statement. "Recently I unearthed a VHS tape housing footage of my 1998 self singing on top of my favourite songs of the day, along with my 2000 self publicly performing music for the first time, plus various other blush-worthy self-portraits. I decided to air out this acutely personal footage. My meta music video vision: 1998 self singing a song that 2020 self wrote."
As she repeatedly sings, "I bless this mess / Goddamn, you're doing your best," it's a touching message to the singer-songwriter's younger self.
