Although fans of Underground Kingz (aka UGK), the 17-year rap legends from Port Arthur, TX, are salivating in anticipation of the duo's final studio LP, UGK 4 Life (due March 31 via Jive), they won't have to wait nearly as long for the next UGK-related project.
Speaking to Exclaim!, Bun B, the surviving member of the influential Dirty South group, revealed details about his forthcoming third album. "I got a new solo album coming out this summer, Trill O.G. It's coming out late June or early July on Rap-A-Lot Records," he said. According to Bun, his late partner, Chad "Pimp C" Butler, who died on December 4, 2007 due to complications from his sleep apnea condition, also has a posthumous album in the works for the indie label as well. How, you ask? Well, the project will be using pre-recorded verses and beats from the vault, and will be overseen by Butler's wife.
Bun has already released two solo records, 2005's Trill and 2008's II Trill, but it appears the 36-year-old believes his solo work is still under development. Were he not urged to keep the UGK brand active during Pimp's 2003 jail stint on an aggravated gun assault charge, Bun might not have pursued a solo career in the first place. And yet, II Trill debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 last year.
"A Bun B album is different from a UGK album - two different projects. The Bun B sound is still evolving; it's not so much set in stone as the UGK sound," he says. "[Rapping] was never my dream. I didn't take it serious. I figured I'd give it a shot, see what happens. If not, I'd go on with my life. It ended up turning into a career."
