The Iron Apple

BY Ian DanzigPublished Dec 1, 1999

NYC’s instrumental rock innovators have returned from an assumed hiatus with five new rhythm-powered compositions that continue in their exploratory verve while simultaneously taking their groove back up front. The Iron Apple kicks off with a gyrating pop number that’ll put a swivel back in your hips before delving into a couple of more experimental works that deconstruct the funk. On “Golden Pietro” the sub-minimal Hawtin-esque beats inspire a cold ambience in sharp contrast to the album’s opening. Although live shows are scheduled for December, it’s unclear whether The Iron Apple marks the band’s return, or a belated good-bye.
